Why Content is Important – On a Website or Blog

I always try to hammer into my clients about content creation on their websites. However, the vast majority of them do not get it, especially brand new webmasters. So lets cover why why content is important on a website.

I really don’t think it’s their fault. It can be a hard concept to grasp at first glance when it comes to content. But, if you have a good amount of content, you can get a good amount of free traffic to your site.

The old say is content is the king of everything on the internet. And for the most part, it’s true. You have to have good quality content to attract readers to any website or blog.

Why Content is ImportantPeople fuss all the time about great looking websites and yes, a professional website can make a difference. But if someone I really respect has a crappy looking site, all I really care about is what they have to say. I could really care less if their site is beautiful or not.

This is why content is so important. I know of quite a few professional SEO’s I respect, and their sites are less than stellar to the eye. But the information they write about, is so value packed and so good. It’s truly all that matters.

Ultimately, anyone who reads your content cares about one thing and that WIFM (What’s in it for me)? If you are a professional at something and have a blog where you share you best ideas, people will want to read it.

Quality Content Helps People

When you run across a website or blog by a leader in a field, you can tell. Especially if you are in the same field. You can really tell if they know what they are talking about and if they are sharing their best ideas.

But the best thing about quality content is, it helps people. And this is really what companies like Google are after.

Quality content has it’s own voice and opinion, and really draws a reader in with every word. And, it helps them at each at every paragraph.

So it’s really not just content that is so important it’s quality content that is the most important.

Going Far and Wide

One thing about content is it allows for distribution. If you choose to write a good amount of articles for your site then, this allows you to go far and wide with your content, allowing more people the chance to find you in new places and for more keywords and phrases.

A blog with 500 pages of quality content will beat out a 30 page blog usually most of the time. But, you have to allow yourself time to get there. It takes time to write quality content.

But, the point is, content is scalable. The more you write the more traffic you can get. As long as it’s quality that is.

Content Gets Your Message Out

One thing about content is, it can help you get your message out to the masses. There are abundant stories of people overcoming challenges with content distribution.

Take for instance, I recently read on Cleveland.com about a woman in Cleveland who was sick. The repo man came to her door and was ready to take her care. However, the woman’s daughter answered the door and told him she was very sick.

The repo man felt so bad, he told his boss and wondered if there was anyway she could be helped. So, the company started a fund on Gofundme for the woman, which has now raised over $3000 to help her pay her car payment while she has been sick.

I ended up donating a small amount to help out. However, this would not have been possible if I did not see the story on Cleveland.com. And, the best part is, it was all done with content.

Content is very powerful and can really have an affect on others who read it. This is also why good copywriters and writers, can demand top dollar for their work.

Words can be that enticing and moving for others who read it.

Context is important also. This is the way your content is presented. We see this in the media all the time. A news story takes place and the news team only reports a chunk of the content, leaving out all the other important information.

Content is Everywhere

Content is not only on the internet and the websites you visit. Content is also at the grocery story on the cereal boxes and other packaging. Content is also in the menu you read at lunch and on your television. Or, even on that highway billboard as you drive down the road.

Content is truly all over the place, trying to get across whatever message it can.

It keeps you in the Front

Having fresh content can help keep you in the minds of all your customers and prospects

Content As A Marketing Strategy

Content marketing can take a good amount of time and investment. It’s also usually not a immediate strategy making sales for companies right away. First there is keyword research that has to be done also.

Not every article written will need to be keyword driven. But, when done correctly, content can assist in conversions on a website. This is why it’s so key even being a long-term strategy.

Producing quality content on blogs and websites helps assist in sales for many different companies. Usually, when a company has a good content strategy in place, they are branded much better.

Their articles tend to show up all over search results in Google and they keep in front of their prospects. Then, when a prospect who has seen them months ago, needs them, they will remember the company with the developed content marketing strategy.

What is Guest Blogging

Today were going to cover a little about what is guest blogging? We’ll cover, why people use it, how they use it, when they do and some pros and cons about it.

Many people in recent times, have looked to guest posting as a way to market their website or business on the internet. And many people think this is some kind of new strategy. When the reality is, guest posting has been around for quite sometime.

Web marketers like Jim Daniels have been using guest posting since the mid 90’s and used to call it a grass roots marketing strategy.

what-is-guest-bloggingBut these days, it can take on a whole different tone when used. And many people use it for the wrong reasons. Many are only after building links to get ranked in search engine like Google when using a guest strategy.

This should not be your only focus. Keeping only search engines in mind, when trying to land article opportunities on other sites, can land your site in hot water. But there are many reasons it can work for just about any business.

Whats Your Focus?

You have to take a look at what your focus is when thinking about marketing your website. Are you 100% reliant on Google for all your web traffic? Are search engines your top strategy for getting traffic to your site?

If they are then, you might want to rethink your online marketing strategies. Don’t get me wrong, search engines are an awesome source of traffic. Relying on them 100% can lead to disaster.

So, if you care about Google then you will want to follow their rules a little closer.

But, what if you cared nothing about Google and you used Guest posting as a way to brand your business? Then it can be a great strategy for your website. Not caring about Google means, you will be trying to land articles on other sites that are relevant to your website.

And you will care more about traffic and branding more than anything else.

So, just keep in mind what it is you care about most. We know most people care about Google however. So, they play by Google’s rules.

But, also know link building is another way to get traffic to a website. It can take a ton of work yes but, it can deliver good results over time.

Think Relevance

The problem many guest posters have, is they start trying to place articles on any old website. And the problem is that site, is usually also accepting crap from everyone else also.

So, when using guest posting as a marketing strategy, you want to think relevance first. You want to get your article placed on a website where your audience will care about it. This way you will get some actual traffic.

it does really no good, to place your plumbing article in a magazine about solar panels. You could get many people reading your article, but not many visiting your website.

Find Good Online Publications

The biggest problem with guest posting is people will post on just any old website that will accept their post. But what if you wrote your best content and then tried to land an opportunity in say entrepreneur magazine?

Get your feet wet with some lower authority blogs and sites and once you have some success then try some bigger publications. This can help make all the difference.

Write Better Content

One of the biggest problems we see with many sites we either help or even do a review on is content. Either they didn’t have enough of it or it was really bad.

Take the time to care about your content more and just don’t try and speed though things just so you can get your article done. People know junk when they see it. And your content is really your brand these days.

Pretty much everything thing online is about two things, links and content. While this is an over simplification, your content does really matter.

Crafting quality content can really make all the difference in the long run. People will actually want to read and care about what you write. If you don’t know how to write great content learn.

Write For Humans

Another big problem we site is, people are all wrapped up into seo and Google and they forget all about who they are really writing for. And that’s people. Sure, a search engine cares about your content but ultimately, it’s people who will see it, read it, act off it, learn from it and benefit from it. Who knows, it may even change lives if your content is that good.

So sure, keep that fact that Google will see your content in mind. But, they only rank your content. A human reads it. And, you can get tons of traffic all day long from Google but if know one likes your content, what are you left with?

Guest Posting As A Strategy

if you are going to be using this as a marketing strategy then you should keep a few things in mind. Don’t make all your links pointing back to your site only from guest posting.

Always diversify your links, the best you can. Again, choose only quality relevant websites.

Take some time and practice writing, before unleashing your guest posting campaign. Have a friend or family member read your articles and make the necessary changes.

Next, find the sites you want to try and land some posting opportunities on. Make a list of all your websites and then divide them into an A list and a B list. Your A list will be your much better sites which will be harder to land an article on. And, your b list will be where you start trying to pitch your ideas to.

When you land a few from your B list, then it’s time to try your and go after your A list.

One thing people do is rush way too fast into this or really any online marketing strategy. But take the time to practice, refine and then go after what you want.

Best Paid Traffic Sources

One thing is for sure. If you market online you need traffic and not just any traffic, you need targeted traffic. Today we are going to cover the best paid traffic sources you could be using in your business. And it doesn’t matter if you are an affiliate marketer, a local business or an E commerce store.

When starting out with a brand new website for the first time, many webmasters make mistakes. The biggest problem that usually have is, they have a brand new website and no traffic. So, they either add a few pages and wait for some Google traffic or start looking for paid sources of traffic.

The problem is, they usually choose the wrong source of traffic or do it wrong all together, or expect way too much from what they choose.

Turning any website into a traffic leads machine can take time when doing SEO but, with paid traffic it can be much faster however, you just have to know what you are doing.

best paid traffic sourcesThis is where the 80/20 rule will apply. You really need to focus 80% of your time on the 20% of traffic sources that will actually help you from the start. Then, once you get going you can add in other sources to the mix.

So, how do you know where to spend your time and money on paid traffic? It’s a little different for each type of business but one thing you need to keep in mind is building an email list. Always when you can try to send traffic to grab a potential prospects email so you can send helpful information and promotions at a later date.

Or course, you will not always be sending your paid traffic to a capture page but always keep it in mind. You list is very valuable to your business. And if you lose any source of traffic, you will always have your list which will be able to send traffic at anytime.

Now, with that in mind, lets cover some paid traffic sources for a few different business types and what each one could to with paid traffic.

A Local Business

Now, for a local business there are a couple things they could be doing to get traffic to their site, while they are waiting for their seo campaign to start producing.

Google Adwords

Many local companies advertise on Google adwords. These are the ads you see on the right and the top of Google’s search results. They can be very effective for local companies or they can flop.

Most small companies can get these ads to work. It just takes time and some quality training. Also, they may work a little better at first for a local computer repair shop over a massage company. The reason this happens is people need computers and phones fixed right away. Need a massage might not be an imitate need.

But, with a little trial and error, the massage company could make Adwords work for them.

Testing different ad copy is the key to success for a local company with this source of traffic. You will also need to find profitable keywords for your business. You can start with only a few keywords for your business and then work from there.

If you are not sure which will be producing keywords you could start off with a broad match modified setting. This will allow you to discover profitable keywords.

And after your campaign has been running for a few weeks, you can use search reports to see the actual producing keywords and then start refining you campaigns.

If you are unsure how to do this, you can either call Google or hire an expert to setup your campaigns for you. This again, will all depend on your budget. But, it may be worth it to at least talk to an Adwords consultant to start.

Most local companies also send their Adwords traffic directly to their website. While this may work for some, I would suggest you use a landing page for your Adwords traffic. Using a landing page will allow you to get rid of more distraction from the page and have your visitor focus on your CTA (call to action) you want them to do. This will either be a phone call or filling out a web form usually.

Also, if you don’t get Adwords to work right away for your local business, don’t cream it doesn’t work. It is an investment for the long haul. Set you budget and give it a few months. Adwords is not a set and forget system. You will need to work on it and refine it all the time. You have to be optimizing your campaigns all the time.

Bing Ads

I would also test our Bing Ads for your business. Bing ads reach also on Yahoo. They both produce much less traffic than Google but, you may find they work great for your business.

You are building a plan here and adding Bing into the mix helps with your plan.

Testing Other Sources For Local

While there are other traffic sources local companies can use, we usually suggest they start with Adwords and work on their campaigns and learn how to use it correctly. And once your seo campaigns set’s in, you will find mostly your two top traffic sources will be Adwords and Seo.

But, there are other sources you can try.

Angie’s List

Angie’s list can be a great source of traffic for local companies. It has worked great for companies all the way from local contractors to dentists. But again, you will need to test it out.

If you get involved with Angie’s list, they will usually want to sell you their top ads package. Start small or whatever you budget allows and test it out. It may or may not work for you.

Yelp

Yelp can be another great place for traffic. Many local companies are on Yelp and it’s many times, a great addition for a local business. Again, they have ad packages they will want to see you on. Test small and see how it goes. Later, you can invest more if it works.

Also, always understand, using companies like these you will be getting reviews for your business. While reviews can be a good thing. They can also ruin a business when your company gets bad reviews.

People are not shy about writing a bad review if they had a bad experience. So, if you use one of these sources, always have a plan in case you get bad reviews.

Facebook Traffic

Facebook can be another great way for any company to get traffic. You build a business or fan page, and get traffic with paid ads and by sharing viral content. You can also like other business pages and make comments.

When trying organic free ways to get traffic by liking other pages, you’ll want to keep these to a minimum so you don’t seem like a spammer. Just like a few pages or so a day.

Paid Facebook ads can produce traffic at alarming numbers when done correctly. You will need to test out sending paid ads traffic to your website or Facebook page.

The best way to make any social campaign work is by choosing an image or video people have shared elsewhere. You will also need something relevant to your business. You then post this to your page and you can either boost the post or use a dark post ad.

Again, testing is key here. You will want to test out sending traffic to a landing page, your own website and or a lead capture page. And everything will all depend on your offer or sales message.

If you are testing things out and not getting your traffic to convert, look at what your offer is. It might not be too enticing for your traffic audience.

It’s always good to build your business page with likes. Once you get a steady amount, you can then use Facebook ads (dark post, boost post) to reach more of your page subscribers. The reason this works sometimes better is, you have already built a relationship with your page subscribers.

Too often when selling online, business owners try and make the sale right away. This can work sometimes and it all depends on the company. But, usually building a relationship with people is a much better way.

You see once people start seeing you post helpful content on Facebook, they will be that much more inclined to take you up on your offer when you to produce them. So, always build relationships first and sales second.

Traffic For Affiliate Marketing

With affiliate marketing you have a much broader range then with a local business. So you can generally try out other traffic sources also.

Sure, affiliate marketing can benefit from all the sources talked about above. And it can also benefit from more sources.

Pay Per View Ads

Pay per view ads can benefit affiliates greatly. And, you can usually buy them for pennies. PPV can also be great for list building. When using PPV, it’s a much better idea to send prospects to a landing page to capture their email.

You would then add them into your sales funnel and send out a few emails about the promotion they just saw. Now, Pay per view does not work for everyone. This is why it is important to test a small amount and then scale up your paid ad spend.

E commerce

e commerce can also benefit from most the paid traffic but and a few other ways also. E commerce is a little more tricky however. Again here, it may be best to try and build a house list and sell to it rather then always going for the sale straight away.

Google Product Ads

When it comes to E commerce, you can use Google products ads for your merchandise. It’s also another part of adwords. Google used to use what they called the merchant center however, it’s now called Google Shopping.

These campaigns can work if you have a large or small store. You will have to test out what works for your store.

Final Thoughts

Paid traffic is great for getting traffic to any business website fast. It can really help if you are just getting started, especially if you are waiting for an organic search campaign to start producing traffic.

Always be mindful of what you are spending and realize, you don’t just want to throw money out the window. You do this by optimizing your campaigns and track everything. Then, each month check over the reports and see what’s working and what’s not. Then just refine your campaigns.

Content Marketing Optimization

If you are writing to get traffic, you may want to think about content marketing optimization. There are many things any company or and blogger can do to optimize the process of marketing with content.

Many bloggers hear about the amount of traffic a blog is getting get started writing. But, do the have the first clue, what content marketing is all about? Some really don’t and waste a lot of time writing and getting no where fast.

This can be extremely frustrating not to mention it can also come at a cost. Your time is worth money and you want to always keep that in mind.

Content Marketing OptimizationSo, what are some ways anyone can optimize their content marketing strategy? In today’s post were going to cover all the ways we know how to do content marketing and how to optimize it to get a maximum return on your time investment.

Where To Start

Ok, so you heard about websites that are getting loads of traffic from Google and you want a piece of that pie. There is nothing wrong with that. The problem is most people get started and go about things the wrong way.

So, where here today to try and save you some time and grief. So, it helps to understand about the foundation of content marketing.

So, what really is content marketing? Well, it’s the process of writing content and adding it to your blog or website. But, it can also be writing guest posts for other websites or even press releases.

Either way, it generally involves a lot of writing. And if done correctly, usually a huge amount of writing.

So, if you are starting a new website or blog and let’s say you are new to all of this. You may already have a ton of ideas floating around in your head. And, that’s great. But, some try to do way too much in the start and do not concentrate on what’s important.

The important thing is you just get started. We all know that right? But, if you don’t do something, you of course will never have anything.

So we suggest picking one topic for a new blog and make it something you are passionate about, something you know a lot about. Picking one good topic to get started will allow you to write and not give up.

Later you can start other websites if you want, but for now just concentrate on what it is you really like to do. It could be a career spanning over the last 30 years of maybe you just like to garden.

And don’t worry if your topic is general and you see a huge amount of websites out there already. Competition is a good thing. And, you will be adding your own unique voice in your writing and adding a whole new fresh perspective to everything.

Ok, so you have your topic and your blog is rolling. Now let’s talk a little about content marketing optimization. These are the things you can be doing to get maximum results out of your content efforts.

How Long Should Posts Be?

This is always debated by many but we always recommend more lengthy content. The reason for this is simple. The more content you have per a post or page, the more you may be found by a search engine.

Can you get away with short content? Yes you can. You see it all the time when some sites post just a video on a page. However, helpful content is not really ever short. Of course we do not recommend anything under 500 words and most defiantly not under 300 words.

The truth is, if you really cannot find enough writing in you to produce over 300 words then it is what it is. However, just know you may suffer penalties from search engines like Google.

If you know enough about your subject then we highly recommend your pages be as long as they can. We usually write anywhere from 1500 – 2500 words or more depending on the subject we are writing about.

Back in the pre Google penalty era, many people got away with 250 – 300 word posts. But when Google released their Panda update, most of these sites were gone from their rankings.

It’s pretty simple however, if you pick a topic you know a lot about, then you have a much better chance and producing good quality long articles.

And don’t write words just for the sake of writing either. Google can figure this out.

Could I Find A Writer To Do This For Me?

Yes, you can. However, if you want a website that will be around and stand the test of time, be prepared to pay a handsome sum to your writer. The old saying, you get what you pay for is very true in this regard.

A good writer who usually charges a fair amount will research your topic or subject and usually take days or a week or more to produce a good article.

You have to think about what you want here. If you really want a long term income from your website, then finding a good writer would be the way to go.

Keeping Your Content Fresh

Many experts online will tell you to keep producing fresh content. But, what does that really mean? Some suggest you post every single day while others say only a few times a week.

The problem is, when people try and write articles every single day and they write about the same content over and over. This is one things Google Panda looks at. And, many webmasters do this unknowingly.

Don’t just do keywords research and pick tons of keywords and start writing. Google has shifted more towards a content style rather than only keywords.

This is why you will see many blog post ranking for many different keywords that are similar and relevant. Focus more on topics, rather than keywords.

The reality is, if you only wrote about one topic a week but made that piece the best you could by rewriting it over the course of a week, it will be that much better. And, there is usually more to add about a topic then there is if you only look at keywords.

This is why we say to make your content as long as you can.

Promoting Your Content

One this is for sure about longer quality content. It’s easier to promote to others. Of course you have to pick good subjects and write quality content people care about. But, in general it will be easier to sell other people on the idea of it.

The first place we suggest for content promotion is social media. The idea here is to build up your social following and then you are able to promote your content to each of your social profiles. This is an awesome strategy but it does take time to work.

And you really do need to build followers. This is the hard part for most people. But sites like Facebook make this easy with things like Facebook ads.

We also suggest building up your profiles of the major social site like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Google+ and more. This way once you build your followers you will have a good amount of people who will see your content.

Quick Social Tip: Once you start building follower, promote pictures and post which already have a lot of shares on social. This way you can get even more followers for free.

Wow Content Promotion

This is the process of writing a long article on a subject very useful to others. This could be a 10 best article or a review of the best gardening tools. Whatever it may be, make it your best.

Then, you find other sites of blogs in your space who would like or care about your content and your email them telling them about your content. One tip that makes this better is writing about an expert and adding them to your post.

Then you email or call that expert and let them know you added them to the article. And, sometimes, they will link back and promote it to their email list or to their social followers. You can find out more here from Brian Dean and his skyscraper technique.

How Many Posts Do I need To Get Traffic

Well, this is all dependent on a few things. If you blog is newer it could take a good amount of time like up to 24 months. Or you could start seeing traffic from your first post.

However, we suggest if your site is newer and you are adding long fresh content and give it a year to really get going. Amit Agarwal didn’t see much traffic for a couple of years. He now has a net worth over a million dollars.

Of course if you produce longer content, then you will be posting less often. But we think this is really over looked. Half of the content battle is just getting started but the other half is making quality content.

Randy Ray reports about the wirecutter in his post about mega content. And the wirecutter is producing a 50k a month income.

Where To Get Ideas For Content

If you chose to make your website about a topic you love and know a ton about then it should be pretty easy to come up with lots of content. However, every writer struggles as some point or another.

When writers block sets in, we suggest reading other blogs in your niche and news sites about your topic. These days all you have to do is search Google about your topic and things will come up.

Take your time and read through much of the news or articles for inspiration. Eventually a top will stand out and you may be able to write again.

Final Thoughts

For a good content strategy to take off and earn you traffic, you want to produce your best content. Always make it helpful and thoughtful for your readers. The more you help people the more they will be inclined to read what you actually write.

Writing longer content is usually better but not always required. The best thing you can do is write for actual humans and not just search engines. Sure keep Google in mind when writing and this is usually done with your keyword in your title these days.

But, writing for humans will help reduce bounce rates from your posts.

Use keywords in your posts sparingly, you don’t want to over do it these days with things like Google penguin on the lose.

Just write your best and the rest should follow.
